How can I add apps to iPad that won't update?

I would like to install the Kindle reading app to an iPad mini 1st gen for library books, I read that it would work if I had already downloaded the app but I hadn't. When I try to install I get an error message that reads, "This application requires iOS 10.0 or later... so I tried to do a software update but it says, "iOS 9.3.5 Your software is up to date." So... Can I somehow install an older version of the app? and/or Can I somehow update to iOS 10? The iPads are working great, my kids love them, I hate to see them become so limited, there really is no need to get new ones 😟

iPad Mini Wi-Fi, iOS 9.3.5

Unfortunately, the iPad is at the latest iOS version it can run - it can't go any higher. And, developers typically only have available the very latest version of their apps. So, you have two choices only: forget Kindle and use the included iBooks app or buy a newer iPad. Sorry.
