MBP Mid 2009 OS 10.11 Restart or Shut down causes kernel panic

My MBP mid 2009 17” running OS 10.11 has a problem when shutting down or restarting using the Apple menu options. On restart it cause a kernel panic. After shutting down it restarts instead of shutting down producing the same error. If I then do a shutdown or restart without doing anything else all is well but if I do anything else I have the same issue. If I go to sleep via the timer method I have no problem but if I sleep via
apple menu or lid closed method I have the same restart/shut down issue.

I suspect that there is something in RAM memory that is causing the problem that does not transfer to the hard drive when sleeping via timer method.

Thanks Tom T.
