How to deactivate phone number from iMessages for stolen phone - no access to lost SIM card number

My iPhone was stolen on vacation, so I had a temporay SIM card installed. The international phone number as registered to iMessage. I am unable to deregister number, because the online iMessage deactivation page is trying to verify the deactivation be sending a txt to a non-exisant number. Who’s bright idea was this?
