How to stop Podcasts from downloading after iPhone upgrade

I upgraded from an iPhone5 to 7. Previously listened to podcasts are now uploading and I cannot make them stop. It has been going on for hours and it is uploading podcasts that were listened to and deleted two years ago. How can I turn this off?

I could formerly just delete episodes to prevent unintentional downloading. Apple has added the "feature" of removing that capability of deleting individual episodes.
