iMac will not start if external drives are connected.

I m using a 27" Late 2013 and operating system macOS High Sierra. i had problems with the last update but finally got that up and running. The problem I experiencing since then is at a cold boot or restart i have to remove all external drives. I have ran the first aid on the drive and that comes up OK. The other problem I have is that with some of my programs are opening on the far extreme left side and can not be moved to centre of screen. Any help with these would be greatly appreciated

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), also run Windows 10

Uninstall Avast AV app per the developers instructions. Mac OS does not benefit at all by adding antivirus, cleaning or any third party "maintenance" apps. If kept up to date and other wise left alone Mac OS will run well for years. It is designed to be extremely secure so please leave it alone.

Uninstall Avast, then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in the link and then restart normally and test.
