All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago, I cannot add a screen shot to an email.
Mail freezes and I have to Force Quit.
I can add it from my iPhone or iPad, but not from the Mac desktop.
How can I rectify this?

And post the results , something is running in the system that is creating problems , what Joseph023 suggested is also be done as sometimes if mail applications is corrupted , deleting the account and once again configuring works see these articles Set up Mail on your Mac with email accounts - Apple Support
Running safe mode also helps macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode
Can you try removing your email account, and then add it back to Mail? See if that helps.
Can you add other image files (png, jpeg ...)?
