Using VSC with IMac, I get the message "code language not supported or defined"

Using VSC with IMac, I am getting the message "code language not supported or defined" tried other ways by several websites and nothing worked. The code was originally taken from another computer and the code was run successfully. Where am I going wrong with using VSC?
