How can I change my Apple ID email?

I am trying to change my Apple ID's email address, however when I try to do so it says that the email I am trying to change it to is unavailable. I know for a fact that this email isn't being used and so it should be available for me to change it do. Is there any known way I can get round this without having to directly contact Apple?
