Ipad pro keynote presenter mode not displaying notes!?

Can someone please help me. When trying to give a presentation in keynote using my ipad pro the presenter notes would not show when I hit play. In rehearsal mode it was fine, but when I attached the projector via a lightning adapter for hdmi and vga, it only showed the slide, no notes.

This is useless if I cannot see my notes...help. What am I missing?
