internal storage- cannot access

The only way I have been able to download pictures easily into my computer is via the internal storage. I go to computer, click on the phone and click on internal storage.

Then DCIN would come up and all the folders....Now. I see the internal storage, click, and nothing is there...meanwhile my phone is nearly full with photos.

Why can I no longer view my photos from internal storage?
