iphone is coming up with plug into itunes screen after i tried to do update and now cannot restore or uodate through itunes without an error message coming up at the end ? please help

Already plugged into iTunes to update/restore but error message comes up after trying to complete this action. iPhone hasn't been updated since 2016. Was working fine until we tried to do a software iOS update on it.
