Why doesn’t my car Bluetooth work when the iPhone screen is on?

Recently I upgraded to an iPhone 8 and now my Mazda Bluetooth keeps disconnecting. The strange thing is that this only happens when the iPhone screen is on, for example when using google maps. With the screen off it works fine. Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? Thanks
