I'm trying to like Pages in lieu of my long use of Appleworks, but I can't figure out how to do a document in Pages and save it as Word. I do this all the time in Appleworks to interface with the PC folks, but I can't seem to find out how to do it in Pages. Word docs open up beautifully in Pages, but is the "save as" Word option a thing of the past? thanks, Bob Krist

You need to "Export" the document as Word -- the option is in that menu item (under the File menu) and not under Save As.

It's really just a matter of terminology. Using Save As… in AppleWorks or Export… in Pages both translate the file from AppleWorks or Pages to Word. Personally, I think calling it Export makes more sense.

I do too. Export reminds you that Pages is translating the file and it may not come out as you expect, especially if you get fancy with it. I keep all my docs simple for my PC buds.

"Export" is without doubt the most honest word, as it acknowledges Pages' difficulties in producing MS Word documents.

However, from a usability standpoint it is not optimal, as many users do not even think of looking for it. They expect "Save as..." and if they do not find it, they give up.

A user coming from the old OS9 days would certainly have a problem because "Save As..." used to be a complex dialog that would have tons of options. "Save As..." with most OSX apps is now the simple dialog that allows you to save the current doc with a different name and "Export" is where all the complex stuff goes.

I have some apps that don't follow this, but these are meant to open old OS9 formats so many of the users may still be more familiar with OS9 conventions.

"Translate to file type Word and save" would have been the best and least confusing command phrase.
