Why does latest OS X 10.13.3 update cause the Message application to crash/freeze

Current configuration:

iMac 27", Mid 2011

Processor 2.7Ghz Intel Core i5

Memory 4Gb 1333 Mhz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 Mb

Unable to startup/use Message application after recent Mac OS X 10.13.3 update

Is there a solution/OS X update being planned? What workaround exists? Are there temporary patches or OS X 10.13.3 configuration changes I can execute to return Messages to a operational state?
