I've tried some forum solutions suggested including:
Deleting old backups on Time Machine.
Sweeping with whatsize and omnisweep which seem to be finding that my disk is really clear.
Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end here!

If Omni DiskSweeper and WahtSize report your disk differently I would believe that.
The Storage tab often reports incorrectly. Also check by choosing your Mac HD and "Get Info" (command-i). It may be different. Try rebuilding Spotlight index.

Is there anyway to purge the purgeable? I'm trying to install something that's around 40gb and it's saying I don't have enough space.
I've tried reindexing and that doesn't appear to have helped!
Grand Perspective is very useful in this cases.

Try deleting the Time Machine local snapshots.
Not at my mac to check the details atm but you can search online for instructions on using tmutil for this purpose.
