is it ok to install a 16GB kit in my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)?

My MacBook Pro is very slow. I currently have 2, 2GB cards (4GB) installed and I wonder if installing 2, 8GB cards (16GB) will improve its performance and increase its speed?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

I checked in High Sierra and had Erase options. The only odd thing was that once an APFS partition was created there was no option to reformat in HFS+ without reformatting the entire drive or sacrificing that partition to an existing and contiguous HFS+ oartition.

You do that with Disk Utility. How did you do the backup? If it was to an external bootable volume then you can use that as a startup disk by holding down option during power on, and running Disk Utility. Other than that you should be able to run Disk Utility from Internet Recovery. Hold down option-command-R at power on.

About macOS Recovery - Apple Support

With Disk Utility you make sure that View>Select All Devices is chosen. Then click on the Erase button at the top. It will give you options for a name to call the volume and format type. Most recommend Mac OS Extended (Journaled), although it's also referred to as "HFS+".

From that point you can do whatever it is you want. Restore from Time Machine, re-clone, a clone, or start with a fresh install of MacOS. You could do the latter and then use Setup Assistant to copy over data from your backup (can be TM or a clone).

It may increase the speed but it will depend on why it is currently slow, if the slowness is caused by excessive memory swapping there will be an increase in performance by increasing the available RAM. if it is caused by some other issue there will be no increase until the problem is eradicated.

In your picture you have selected the partition, not the disk. The disk itself is the topmost entry.

Which version of MacOS are you using?

That's definitely one of the newer versions of Disk Utility (for example no "Burn" button). However, shouldn't there be an option to erase/reformat any partition individually?

is it ok to install a 16GB kit in my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)?
