trying to delete older backups out of trash

I moved some older backups My Time machine backups from an external hard drive to trash - however trash will not allow them to be permanently deleted. Says that Library is in use? Now I can't get them out of the trash either.

Any help is apprecuated

Only delete Time Machine backups through the TM interface, never attempt to delete them through Finder. They will always get stuck in the Trash and you won't be able to get rid of them. You'll notice if you disconnect your TM drive they will disappear from the Trash but as soon as you reconnect the drive they will appear again.

The latest and easiest way to get rid of them is to erase your TM drive and start over.
