Can not erase pictures from Iphone IOS 11.2.6

Hi, at some point I had an external hard drive connected to my MACBook and synced some of the pictures and videos in it with my iPhone. I have access and can delete any picture that was taken with my phone, but as far as those that were imported there is nothing I can do from the phone perspective. Has anyone any idea of how to go in and select and remove the ones I don't want in there? This synchronization is making the whole file handling a hot mess. Can you just let us access the file system and copy, move, delete files like in any other NORMAL system?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 11.2.6

If the photos were synced to the phone from a computer via iTunes, you need to sync again using the instructions below in order to delete them. See the following from Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all of your devices - Apple Support

If you don't want the synced photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch anymore, turn off syncing in iTunes and they'll be removed from your device. You can turn off syncing for some of your photo albums or all of them at once.

Stop syncing some albums

  1. Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click on the device icon in iTunes.
  3. Click Photos.
  4. Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections that you want to stop syncing.
  5. Click Apply.

Stop syncing all photos

  1. Open iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click on the device icon in iTunes.
  3. Click Photos.
  4. Deselect "Sync Photos" then click "Remove photos."
  5. Click Apply.
