My iMac keeps going straight to OS X Utilities

After trying to download the latest High Sierra update, my crashed. It went to black screen with the Apple logo and a loading bar. It took 2 days for the loading to be done. It then went to OS X Utilities.

iMac restart stalled after installing High Sierra Hello - I've restarted my iMac for the first time after installing High Sierra 10.13.6. The loading screen has stalled out and is still showing the black screen with white loading bar for about 30 minutes now. I'm wondering if it's trying to install the latest OS update? Although I'm pretty sure I disabled auto updates but now have no way to check. Is there a way to reboot the restart and bypass a possible OS update? I don't want to install Catalina. I've never had this happen on restart - ever. Thanks.

MacOS problem My Mac tried to update to Monterey but for some reason crashed and has left me with no operating system. forsome reason space bar on power on does not start in safe mode ( I have a wireless keyboard) but I can start with option-command-R or shift-option-command-R but even when going through that for 60+ minutes, I still get a crash part way through installation, asking me to restart - even when trying to reinstall high sierra
