How to keep more than one window open

I want to drag a photo into the body of an email, but cannot figure out how to keep the mail window open when I open the Finder window. I am sure there must be an easy way to do this but, no luck so far. Thanks in advance for any help.

Open finder window then apple mail application , compose a mail ( command and N ) , minimise the mail application ( command and M ) .Then drag and drop photo in mail subject window to get attached .
