Using dictation in texts

Hello, I am trying to use dictation, particularly in messages. The microphone icon is there, but nothing happens when I press and hold. I have dictation enabled in settings, and siri is activated. Any other ideas or help? Thanks.

iPhone 6, iOS 11.2.5

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. I understand Dictation isn't working as intended when it comes to text messages, and I'd be happy to help you figure out the reason. First off, I notice you're running an iOS version that's slightly behind our most current. While it's unlikely the inherent reason for your trouble with Dictation Commands in Messages, outdated iOS software could negatively impact any of the troubleshooting steps we take moving forward, so we should start by updating it. You'll want to back up your iPhone beforehand, then update using whichever method is most convenient for you: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

When the update is done, give Dictation another shot in Messages. If it's still not working, let's head to Settings > General > Siri and disable it, then restart the iPhone. You should leave it off for a few minutes, then reboot and switch Siri back on. Give Dictation another shot.

If that doesn't work, we might be dealing with some kind of software incompatibility (since Dictation issues are exclusive to the Messages app). You'll already have the back up from before you updated, so let's go ahead and restore the device to factory new settings: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

While running the fresh software, test out Dictation in Messages and update the thread with your findings.
