Question: How to move or nudge group of clips to new location?

See my attached screen shot of a group of clips sitting on the primary storyline to which they are connected. Some contain transitions (fades).

I am unable to find a way of moving the selected multiple clips which I need relocated. I have tried dragging with the Select tool but they won't budge. I am unable to move them with arrow keys. The Position tool will only select individual clips, not the whole group of clips.

I can copy and paste, but I need to nudge them to the correct frame due to fade ins.

Any advice or tips?

thanks,

Answer:

No idea why it is not working for you.

What Tom and I described is pretty standard (actually not just in FCP X, but for mac applications in general, this is the behavior of command-click).

And once of you have a selection made, click and drag affects whatever is selected. What exactly happens to you when:

1) Click on a shelf to select a storyline, then command-click on another shelf

2) Click and drag on a selected item when more than one thing is selected?

Maybe you could do a short screen recording and post it so we better understand what you are trying and why it is failing.

Now that I got to try this on my mac, I can confirm that dragging and nudging are both working just fine.

Looking back at your screenshot, I think I see what the problem is.

You have selected the clips inside each secondary storyline. You need to select the storylines themselves, not the clips. Click the grey "shelves" to select.

Compare how the storyline with titles is selected, vs. your where the titles themselves are selected.

I have tried the advice above, but I can confirm Cmd-click does not work in selecting the 'shelves' or in dragging the group of clips. Neither, Option-click, Control-click (nor any combination) with the 'Select' pointer. I can move each group (shelf) of clips individually, but not more than one at a time.

There just seems no way to move a selected groups of clips if they are inside 'shelves'.

Any other ideas?

thanks,

Geoff

Thanks once again Luis and Tom. I persisted and found my problem - I was still marqueeing the selections (with the Cmd key pressed) instead of clicking on each shelf.

Thanks for taking the time to bear with me, strangely it didn't seem intuitive to me, but seems OK now that I have the correct procedure.

Much appreciated,

Geoff
