Activity not syncing with iPhone 6

A week ago the activity on my apple watch stopped syncing with my iphone 6. In iphone settings/bluetooth it shows that the watch is connected, but if I go into the watch app on the iphone/general/usage I get "could not connect to Apple Watch - make sure your Apple Watch is nearby, powered on and not in airplane mode." The watch is powered on, is about 12 inches from the iphone and is not in airplane mode. Can someone please fathom this out?
