Question: New macbook pro shutdown when I close the lid, only starts with SMC reset

Just got a brand new macbook pro touch bar 13''.

Before I installed anything, it was already faulty:

After closing the lid, even for just a few seconds, the macbook shuts down.

After opening, keyboard and touch bar remain dark. Pressing the power button has no effect.

I realized it would only start up with a SMC reset.

So everytime I close the lid, I have to reset the SMC and start up.

I tried to reset the NVRAM too, but no effect. I ran a test (pressing D on startup) twice, and it found no problems.

From the log, the shutdown cause is number 0: which apparently means "power disconnected".

Therefore I suspect a material problem, either battery or motherboard.

I've been googling the issue up and down without finding a solution.

Any ideas before I bring it in?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. It is under warranty. They will repair or replace it. If you return it with all packaging within the first 14 days from purchase then you can ask for a replacement or money refund, not questions asked.
