I'm doing some video editing in iMovie 10.1.8 running on a MacBookPro 17 min 2010 with macOS High Sierra v 10.13.3.
The videos is digitized from Hi8 and stored im mp4 files.
Some of the files works ok, but some gets a red tint over the whole video file.
The same files plays perfectly in QuickTime.
Any fix for this?

That's interesting. You are running iMovie 10.1.8 and High Sierra, that are the newest versions.
Here's a couple of other things you can try:
Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears.
Open the clip in QuicktimePlayer and then save it to your desktop. You will have a .mov file that you can drag into iMovie. See if it plays without the tint.
Use the free download, Handbrake, to convert or re-convert the clip to Mp4/AAC. Handbrake will do it by default.

You can try re-encoding the tinted clip.
Put the clip on your desktop. Control click on its icon. In the drop down menu that appears, click on Encode Selected Video files. A selection box will appear. Set for 720 or 1080. Encode for: Greater Compatibility. Click Continue. The clip will encode as a .m4v file on your desktop. Drag the endoded clip into iMovie and see if it plays without a red tint.

I've did this, but no luck. I downloaded an mac app to do a similar conversion, still no luck.
Then I took the actual video file to my ipad pro and imovie on that. There the video looks normal. But I cant't do this project on the ipad. Way to weak and small to run the project, I think.
I 'm trying to run this on another mac, with different versions on osx and imovie. Working on that.

Now I've done the whole row of tips. iMovie delete prefs = no luck. QT save as = no luck. But in the last one. Convert with Handbrake, then I discovered a difference in 3 of the files, converted to same format as the ok files = all happiness and great video. :-)

And I did contact Apple support, but they will not, or can not, help me. "To old system" they say. I think they just want me to buy a new macbook.
