Question: Displaying a macbookpro on an imac

Imac late 2013 (27") running 10.13.3

Macbook Pro late 2011 (13") running 10.13.3

Linking with new Apple 2meter thunderbolt cable

Can get the desktop by hitting Command function 2 but imac is dark and cannot see documents, photos, windows etc.

Only the Background desktop

Any ideas?

Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/HT204592

Is it possible the second display is working as an extended desktop instead of mirroring? See displays system preferences.
