iMac not booting

hi,

i have an iMac 21 inch 2012 model. tried to upgrade to macos high sierra. Mac fails on start up (switches off). i can boot in recovery mode however when I try to run first aid on Macintosh HD it fails - File system verify or repair failed.

Can I get my data from the hard drive before erasing and reinstalling?

When I try to reinstall macOS there is no disk to select to install macOS

Thank you

iMac

If you have another Mac, Target Disk Mode is your friend. Booting in Target Disk Mode then rescue data from iMac HDD.
