Can iphone 8 sync with older macs?

If I get an iPhone 8 for my wife (she currently has an iPhone 6), will I need to also upgrade her 2010 MacBook Air so she can successfully backup and sync?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Devices running iOS 11 require iTunes 12.7, with requires OS X 10.10.5 or later. If her Mac is not running at least 10.10.5, she will need to upgrade macOS.
