My iPhone won’t let me update my apps, it’s asking for billing information. It shouldn’t cost to update your apps.

You won't be charged but it needs to verify the payment information you have already given it.

I have some free apps which offer in-app purchases which I have not used. I have never ever entered any payment information into Apple's system. However, I do know that many free apps seem to have an automatic subscription to something with a free trial. They hope to get you to sign up and then forget to cancel the subscription, then charge you a ridiculous amount (I think somebody has found a way to game the system) when the autorenewal starts charging.
