AOL mail not working on iPhone

Okay weird problem. I have been using AOL for over 20 years and have had the same email address. I have others, but this is my main email, so changing it as my main email would be cumbersome.

Anyway, a few days ago, my iPhone stopped updating with AOL email messages. I could access messages that were on my phone from that point and before, but nothing current, as in the past few days. So I went through Apple's troubleshooting steps of deleting the AOL account from the Settings on my iPhone, reinstalled it, and lo and behold, my phone's settings keeps telling me I have either the wrong password or the wrong email address/Name.

I tried this several times to no avail.

So I went onto my browser to make sure I had all my details correct (name, email address, password) and verified I did. So now, scratching my head, I used Safari to access AOL's site directly through the browser on phone. It asked me for my email address and password, and it works fine! Okay, so then I downloaded the AOL app, went through basic setup, same email, same password, and it also works fine!

Weird!

At this point I just removed the "Mail" icon from the first page of my Home Screen and replaced it with the App I just downloaded. It works fine, as does Safari. So obviously there is something wrong with my phone's settings. I just did the latest iOS update to see if that would help, and it doesn't.

So at this point, while I have AOL mail on my phone, both with the newly downloaded App as well as with a Safari Browser window, I would LOVE to know why the stock "Mail" app no longer works, and why my phone's "Settings" keeps spitting back an error message even though the password and email address work everywhere else but there.

I just fixed this problem by deleting my aol account from apple devices. Logging into AOL and under account security settings turning on the setting to "allow apps that use less secure sign in", I was able to then add my aol account on my iPhone and MacBook. I am not sure if deleting the account or changing the password was necessary.

This exact thing happened to me and I figured out why! A few days before I had inadvertently changed a setting on the AOL Account Settings page on my desk top computer! I was in my AOL Account checking things out and on the Account Settings page the last setting says:

Allow apps that use less secure sign in

Some non-AOL apps and devices use less secure sign-in technology, which could leave your account vulnerable. You can turn off access (which we recommend) or choose to use them despite the risks.

I noticed it was turned off and the recommendation was to turn it on (see above) - so I did! It seemed harmless enough! After that I could not get or send mail on my iphone anymore! I went back in to the Account Settings page on my desk top and changed that setting back to "off". Immediately checked my phone and everything is working again!

I hope this helps someone!

I had this same problem with AOL on my iPhone. Tried ALL the "fixes" except for deleting the account and reloading it - I didn't want to do that in case I never got it to work again. I also verified (and also re-entered) my username and password in my iPhone. Nothing worked. But I did figure out a solution - and it is super easy - AND I don't think you ever need to do more than my procedure if you're getting the "Username or password incorrect" message.

Use another device (laptop, desktop, etc.) to access your AOL account via a browser. CHANGE your password. Logout and Login to verify your NEW password. If OK, log out again. Go to your iPhone and CHANGE your password to the new one you set. Voila! Works great. I can only assume that the iPhone has some glitch at times and even if you delete and then re-enter the password again ... it doesn't work and the glitch remains. Cache issue? IDK The key is to CHANGE the password in the phone to match what you set via the browser step. I suppose you could do this same thing using the browser on your phone to change the AOL password, but I'll have to wait until my iPhone screws up again to test that. BTE - This happened to me a couple of years ago and the "fix" I described above worked then, as it did today. Hope this helps someone else!!! Cheers

I went to my pc changed password on aol and then changed pasword on each device. Seems to have fixed the problem. I did not want to delte mail app unless this did not work but there was no need to now that all seem to be working. Ok this is how you fix it. Had all the exact same issues. Go to Safari on iPhone> log in to AOL>then select account>account security>manage app passwords,(does not have to be aol app, works the same just for phone mail app)>select iPhone mail>generate password. It will be a long password. Write it down, when you go back to Email settings on iPhone, it will be this password you put in your phone including spaces in between. It will not be your normal password. AOL now has a two step authentication. Once you enter this password. Check marks will appear by all aol related items. Your phone will automatically default to iCloud email, go to Email under settings, change default to AOL. Done it works. My husband had every issue all others had. This is the fix. Hope this helps!

This happens to me with my iOS Mail app and my AOL account. At seemingly random times it stops being able to retrieve new emails and the error code says that my username and/or password are incorrect. I've been able to correct this every time it happens by going to my Safari browser, logging out of my AOL account on AOL Mail's website and then logging back in.

After I do that, when I return to my iOS Mail app and refresh it is able to receive and send mail again with no issues. It's mildly inconvenient but it doesn't occur daily, so I haven't really looked for a better solution.

All of my inbound and outbound email credentials and imap data is 100% accurate, so it's not that. I suspect this is something on AOL's end that gets hung up, and a log out/in on the device clears it up.

lol boy you are right about that! Especially since this has been an on going issue and it does seem to occur when the updates come out. But this time I didn’t update my phone yet and it happened. I finally changed the password (by logging into AOL from my pc), then changing it on my iPhone. Still didn’t like that. So I had to delete the AOL mail and reinstall. Just tried to send an email and it did go thru. Now I will have to see if I am receiving from all accounts and can send from all accounts tmr. Apple and AOL def need to get their **** together!

Ok after dealing with this for 7 weeks it finally dawned on me. When u go into settings for ur AOL account under account security there is a 2 step log in process. Click manage. Make sure it’s turned on. Then under Connect Apps click manage. Click the down arrow for create a new application and choose IOS mail and the device is whatever device u r using (ie: iPhone, iPad etc). Click create. It will give u a password. Copy the password. Then go into create an aol account through the iPhone mail app and use the copied password. Hope this helps.

I have always used two factor. Been hacked twice WITH two factor. Also had an unkown app password made on my account from another country. RUN if you can. I am stuck with them for now but slowly trying to switch to another email and close it. The app password has always worked well for me. I was hacked for the first time about 30 min after downloading and logging in to the AOL app from the app store maybe just my foil hat but I refuse to use it. Also AOL is down a LOT so a few times when I thought my email was acting foolish it was AOL. I do not think it is the phone or Apple. Settings and or if you have tried all of the above maybe it is out. Check the reviews on the actual app. Also paid customers seem to have a lot of issues so not sure what they are paying for. And I called about said issue and was told I had viruses and to give remote access and was quoted a few hundred to "fix" said viruses I did not have. Big YIKES for me.. Never let them do this. People have been scammed as I have recently read a lady did allow them to and it messed her PC up. To give up a right to not sue them to continue to use the email service is just well uncomfortable. Because they have been sued before I guess. L I have an idea of exatly who hacked me twice.. I hate that AOL was forced on us unless we gave up email that we have used for a decade or more.

When I down loaded the first IOS 12.1 I believe on my Iphone 8, the AOL contacts quit updating. AOL mail worked fine. Then I hoped IOS 12.2 would fix the problem. NO! In fact all my contacts on my phone disappeared. When I use carddav.aol.com like always, there apparently is no server or port identifed in the IOS software. It is for AOL mail. This looks like an Apple software problem. I have used AOL for over two decades; everybody knows this e-mail address. I have over 200 contacts on AOL. Now I can't access them so SIRI can make phone calls for me. APPLE, please fix this.
