Is it possible to type long and short vowel accent marks on imac?

When trying to learn a new language it is helpful for me to type the word phonetically. Is there a way to put the long and short vowel accent marks over letters on an imac?

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.5)

You can push and hold a key to get a context menu with different options. You can then click using your pointer or choose the number for each character.

You can also use the character viewer (Edit > Emoji & Symbols) for non-standard letter combinations like ŷ (y-hat) which is used in statistics but not in any language I am familiar with.

Yet another option is to add another language to the keyboard, and use the keyboard viewer which maps foreign languages to the keyboard you have:

Good luck!
