How do I set alternate rows in Numbers to be a different colour?

I am running High Sierra (10.13.3) on my MacBook Pro (MacBookPro11,5), which has a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i& processor and 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. It has a 500 GB drive, and it has about 100 GB free.

I am using Apple Numbers, version 4.3.1 (5249).

I am having problems setting an alternating row colour in Numbers. I have tried to do it by clicking "Alternating Row Colour" under the Table tab on the right hand side. Nothing happens.

I have then tried to go into the Cell tab on the right and make all cells have no fill, as that seems to be the only advice I can find online. I click on Edit, Select All, then in the Cell tab I select "No fill". I then go to the Table tab and click "Alternating Row Colour" and set the colour I want, but nothing happens. The only information I was able to find online is from 2010 and those suggestions don't work.

Does anyone know how to do this, and/ or how I am going about it the wrong way?

Hi Lilleth,

You're going about it the right way. In the table below, I selected a cell, opened the Format Inspector, chose Table, checked the Alternate Row Color checkbox, and chose a(n inappropriate) colour from the color well.

An alternate method is to click one of the Table Styles at the top of the Inspector panel, as I did here:

(I clicked the first one in the second row)

Examples done in Numbers 3.6.2 on El Capitan. Process should be much the same with Numbers 4.x.x.

Barry

EDIT: SGIII raises a legitimate point with the question regarding a file imported from MS Excel.
