How to know when MBP Touch is shut down?

Apple's official support page macOS Sierra: Log out, sleep, restart, and shut down says:

"A Mac is completely shut down when there is a black screen; some computers also don’t show an active power light or have any fan or drive noise" and also "Important: If you have a portable Mac, wait for it to shut down completely before closing the display. If you close the display while the Mac is shutting down, it may not shut down properly and may start up more slowly the next time you turn it on."

Unless I am in a completely dark room I cannot tell the difference between a dark screen that is still shutting down and a completely black screen. There is usually a white turning circle, but sometimes I am not sure whether it has not come on yet or if it has already come on and gone off.

If I leave my lid open a few inches and leave until the next morning my MBP Touch 13 2017 version running MacOS 10.12.6 will not boot on its own when I come back the next morning and open the lid all the way - I have to poke the Touch/Power button to start it up.

How can I know when my Mac is fully shut down, since Apple has removed the white Apple light from the top of the lid on the 12" MB and the 13" and 15" MBPs?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 2017 MBP Touch 13"

I called Apple support. They said:

1. Wait a brief additional period of time after you think it has shut down before closing the clamshell.

2. If you aren’t sure, press the Capslock Key. If it lights up, your Mac is still on.

3. Press the Capslock Key before shutting down and when the key goes dark, the Mac is powered down.
