I cannot send Messages from my mac

I've always been able to send iMessages from my mac until just yesterday. New messages can be seen on the mac but I can no longer respond to them. When I type in the message I get an error message "Not Delivered" along with a red exclamation mark in a circle. I've quit and re-started the app and looked online but can't find any helpful hints that work. I am running High Sierra Version 10.13.3. and is completely up to date. Any suggestions?

Have you tried signing out of Messages and then sign back in?

Try the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode - About El Capitan
also Sierra

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
