on my screen a file with a question mark appears but I’m not sure if I saved my files. I don’t wany my files erased. Would following these steps keep my information that was on my computer saved?
Ideally you should have had a backup. In theory reinstalling an operating system leaves data file intact, though there is the underlying question as to what caused the system to be broken and did that affect other files too?
The first parts of that document should not affect your files but the third definitely will
If Disk Utility can't repair your startup disk -- erases entire drive.
