Audio stuck on digital-out. Red light from headphone jack, can't play audio

Hello,

I have a mid-2014 Macbook Pro 15 inch Retina.

About a week ago, my Macbook stopped playing audio, and I lose control of the volume. I also noticed that there is a red light coming from the audio jack. When I go into my sound preferences, all I see is Digital Out (no internal speakers option).

I have tried plugging and unplugging an aux cable. When the headphones are plugged in, I can change the volume and it's fine, but when I unplug them I go back into digital out mode and lose control.

I have read in some places that this can be caused by dust/lint tricking the sensor, but I figured I should ask here before doing any digging into the jack itself .
