macOS (APFS) and bootcamp partitions no longer mount

I recently applied two updates to my Windows 7 system (system is kept up to date regularly). They were applied following a shutdown. When I rebooted a short time later, the system started from my High Sierra backup drive. My primary macOS (High Sierra, APFS) and Windows 7 partitions configured on a hardware RAID drive (Velocity x2) did not appear in the Finder.

I ran diskutil list in a terminal window and got the following results:

User uploaded file

The RAID is 500GB total created from two 250GB Samsung SSDs (disk5). It is encouraging to see two partitions showing up in the terminal window, although the APFS volume shows as HFS.

I wanted to post here before I make any recovery attempt. Another user suggested booting into Parted Magic. The Partition Editor has an option to scan but I'm concerned that it might do more than read and report. Although the Windows bootcamp partition is actually more important to me right now, I would like to get back the APFS partition also if possible.

Hopefully this is something simple for those skilled using the terminal window.

Good to see that Loner T is still active here. 🙂

My system is a 2009 MacPro.

Ok, if it is alright with you, I would like to continue gathering the information while booted from the Backup drive. It is easier to cut and paste the output this way. disk6 will appear as disk5 instead but it is the same RAID.

The drive we worked on was 500GB. You now have a 250GB disk.

I see what you mean!

So either my RAID *has* failed or perhaps of one the SSDs has. 😟 I can try removing and reseating the drives I suppose.

I guess my only option is to try to get the data off of the Windows partition if at all possible. Is there anything you can recommend? Parted Magic might be able to help but I'm totally open to any other suggestions.

Thanks.

Removed drives, cleaned contacts, reinserted card in a different slot.

No luck. The RAID still appears the same way. The Samsung SSDs have a 5 year warranty. If I can conclude one has failed, they will probably honor it for replacement. I wonder what is more likely though-- a failed SSD or a failed RAID setup. This is a "bit" of a hack after all and it has shown signs of instability in the past.

I also tried the Parted Magic recovery. It scanned what it could see for several minutes then came back to say it found nothing recoverable. 😟

It was a choice between better and best and I was happy choosing better. Samsung established a good reputation in Solid State storage at the time so I did not hesitate to go with EVO. It fit my budget too.

I'm leaning to the Velocity card as the fault at this point, but not ruling out an SSD just yet.

One thing should be certain-- the OS should not be able to cause this to happen. A hardware RAID is below its reach.

Mar 12, 2018 9:31 AM in response to Loner T

I think I understand what you're saying. I was warned about the risks of using RAID0 and I went ahead with it thinking I should be fine because I chose reliable SSDs. Maybe they're not so reliable in this configuration. The card could be to blame also. Seems odd that it would be discontinued already.

I received a response from Apricorn tech support. They said they do not know of a way for me to "rejoin" the second SSD. They suggest running Spinrite to see if the damaged part of the RAID can be repaired but they believe it will be a long shot.

Mar 12, 2018 11:37 AM in response to Loner T

I was thinking the same thing. It has actually worked for me in the past with mechanical drives but it could make matters worse with solid state storage. No harm in letting to "scan" for problems, though. If it finds something, I think I will then try removing the drives and attach them individually to the computer first. If that does not work, I will put them back into the RAID card and let Spinrite do its thing.

Mar 13, 2018 10:17 AM in response to Loner T

No luck with Spinrite. I scanned the drives still in the RAID card and also as individual drives. It found no errors!

When you say "rebuild" the RAID, are you referring to the BIOS setup I posted? The rep said he does not know a way to join SSD 1 back to SSD 0 but maybe I should try starting over? I can of course remove the "New_VD" setup and then redo what I did originally. This would certainly destroy the original setup data but what would it do to the actual drive data? A broken RAID cannot remove all bits of data, right? That would require a mult-pass wipe. Then again, we're talking SSDs here.

I did some googling and I've read about people successfully recovering data from a broken RAID 0 using Linux. However, I believe these were software RAIDs using mechanical drives.

Mar 14, 2018 7:30 AM in response to Loner T

Let me clarify-- I have 95% of the macOS system backed up thanks to the separate boot drive I had installed. The Windows 7 system is the one I would be losing the most from.

I found this:

https://www.diskinternals.com/raid-recovery/

This did a pretty good job of recognizing the RAID structure (despite being damaged). I did not realize the best way to deal with this problem is to remove both disks from the RAID controller and install them *together* in another computer. I was only testing them individually. With them installed in another working computer, the software can then see the original 500GB drive and allow you to recover files. After a very long scan, it is showing me files and folders in their native format.

The problem is......cost. The company wants more money to provide full recovery than my data is worth. 🙂 I was hoping to stumble across a linux/open source RAID reconstructor but no such luck so far.

Mar 14, 2018 6:16 PM in response to Loner T

Yeah, I didn't think it would. Not sure why you suggested putting them back in the Mac at this stage.

I do not believe there are many options in the RAID setup besides deleting the Virtual Drive and redoing it. It *might* work but now that I see that I have access to the NTFS partition, I may risk losing that if I tamper with the RAID setup. Apricorn is not offering any solutions besides trying to get the data off using other methods. They're even saying I should not try to use either drive in a RAID again if I do recover data. I'm skeptical of that advice. I will do my own tests once I'm done trying to repair/recover before I call the drives unusable.

macOS (APFS) and bootcamp partitions no longer mount
