Logging out of your user account should also stop the background processes. That will still allow Time Machine to backup your Mac.
That is a large library - the background scanning will take weeks

You state that you have OS X 10.7.4 which has no support for Photos - is that correct or what OS do you really have?

It’s about 600 Gigabit the external hard drive is 8TB and has only 1.2 TB on it
