How to transfer all photos and videos from iPhone to desktop

when I am transferring using DCIM folder of iPad or iPhone then my desktop is storing same image twice - I think this is happening for Live Photo’s. it is saving same image as .jpg and also as .mov (2 or 3 seconds video). Is there any way that we can avoid this duplication and simply transfer all photos to the desktop

In my research I found that there are SEVERAL files for EACH image and that you lose the edits if you move the pics to a PC. Is this really true?
