How to make "open with" stick?

No matter how many times I define which app I want to use to open specific files (such as Preview for PDFs), after a few days the app gets changed to something I don't want (such as iBooks for PDFs).

I keep switching it back using the "Get info" - "Open With" - "Change all" trick, but that only helps for a while and then the bad settings are back 😟

Is there a way to freeze the "associated app" settings? I don't want any other processes changing the associations without my knowledge and consent.

Hi there, RadimRehurek.

I see that you'd like all of your *.pdf files to be open with the Preview application on your Mac. You change the application you'd rather use, but it keeps reverting to iBooks after a few days. I'm happy to help.

How to turn on or turn off your Mac -- Restart your MacBook Pro then test the issue.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac -- Start your Mac in safe mode. This will allow safe mode to run certain checks. Once you've reached the Home screen in safe mode, reboot your Mac normally and test the issue. Remember this when booting in safe mode: Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue persists, use this article to create and test another user account. You may need to find *.pdf files to test the issue with in this new account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide.

Let me know how that goes.

Take care!
