Dim/Shaded App Graphic

I usually pick my phone up and hit the home screen to see if i've had an notifications, text, phone calls, battery life......etc etc. Sometimes when I pick the phone up and press the home button to look for those little red notification bubbles I will notice an app has a dim or shaded hue to it's Icon graphic. What is that?
