Question: iMac late 2012 - internal HDD question

Hi,

I am using an iMac late 2012 with an external disk (SSD) as my primary OSX disc.

The internal HD I use as a time machine backup drive as well as data storage (iTunes library, etc).

My questions:

1) if I format the 1TB internal HD, in order to split into 2 or 3 partitions, do I lose the recovery mode (CMD + R while booting) or this is stored in the BIOS?

2) is it "safe/OK" to copy some of the latest backups to a new external HD before formatting or this will not be recognized later by the time machine?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Erik
