My watch won't make calls when phone is in Airplane mode

I have an Apple Watch, which I thought was supposed to make calls even without the phone being available (am I wrong?). I upgraded it when I got the new iPhone 8, and now when my iPhone is in Airplane mode, the watch says "call failed". Am I mistaken that this should be possible, and if not, how do I debug this?

Alright that model indeed should be able to make calls independently from your iPhone thanks to it's Celular capacity so check this out, a feature from a synced Apple Watch is that when we turn Airplane Mode On on the iPhone it automatically does the same in the Apple Watch so what we wan't to do make sure the Airplane Mode on the Apple Watch is OFF by going to the Settings> Airplane Mode on the Apple Watch itself.

ah that would have been so great! But unfortunately, it didn't work. When I switched the phone to Airplane mode, the watch did not go to Airplane mode. Does it mean that my watch and phone aren't paired all the way? Here's what happened. I had it paired to an iPhone 6 and it worked perfectly. I then got an iPhone 8, and wiped the 6, but only then found out that I should have un-paired them... So I wiped the watch and re-paired with the 8 but it gave some sort of error message which I should have written down but didn't do in time. I was suspicious that it might be a problem with calling directly from the watch, which is why I did the experience, and sure enough... it says "Call failed" when I try to call from the watch.
