Question: iMac constantly rebooting

When I power up my iMac it goes through the usual steps leading up to the login screen. Then it goes to a plain black screen, then a grey one with a message that it has restarted due to an error. It shuts down and immediately starts up and does the same thing.

Because I can't get into it, I can't say which OS it's trying to run. But it started after an update.

How can I break the cycle?

G5, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sorry, I think the details were picked up automatically off this iMac that I'm using now.

It's my old iMac that I bought in 2012 that has the problem. I can't tell you which version of the OS but I have kept updating it so while it may not be the latest, it's not that old.
