iMac constantly rebooting

When I power up my iMac it goes through the usual steps leading up to the login screen. Then it goes to a plain black screen, then a grey one with a message that it has restarted due to an error. It shuts down and immediately starts up and does the same thing.

Because I can't get into it, I can't say which OS it's trying to run. But it started after an update.

How can I break the cycle?

G5, Mac OS X (10.3.9)
