My connection to record a movie from my iPad using QuickTime is intermittent, how do i fix this?

Using MacBook Pro, QuickTime Player and iPad Pro the "New Movie Recording" feature is intermittent. I have tried different ports and different startup sequences. Sometimes after 3-5 attempts, it just fires up. Any suggestions on settings or startup sequences that might help?
