Songs missing from iTunes

At least a third of my songs are suddenly missing from my iTunes. These include many that I uploaded from CDs, so it's not a question of dodgy downloads. I think this has happened before, after an iTunes update, and that the songs eventually came back after another update, but that's still not reassuring. Can anyone advise?
