random ad tabs opening in safari

In the past couple of days, when im using safari on my MacBook pro (early 2015) one tab with ads will open up sporadically. it seems to be random timing, being anywhere between 2 to 20 minutes in between and on all different websites, reddit, newyorktimes, apple, etc.

I've cleared cookies and tried disabling extensions ( i only have adblock).

Seems to often be to the same websites too.

ive also tried restarting but it still happens.

all my software is up to date.

please help!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), null
