iMac startup hangs at Apple screen, no progress bar

On restart, my iMac cannot get past the gray Apple logo screen, with no progress bar showing. I restarted it in Recovery mode and ran first aid in disk utility. It checked out okay. I tried to restart again...same problem. Any suggestions?
