Item not added to iCloud Music Library because an error occurred

A little background, this iTunes library has travelled from computer to computer to an external drive now on my new iMac.

That said...

I just signed up for Apple Music a few weeks ago, decided to try to use it. I have my iTunes library MOSTLY in the cloud, but there's quite a bit that didn't get uploaded due to the error in the subject line. Some of them are CDs that I've loaded into iTunes. At least one of them I've verified is available in iTunes Store. Some of them are CDs I've bought from iTunes. I verified I can play them on this computer - at least when I do that, the exclamation point in a circle on the far left goes away. I just can't add them to the cloud and if I try to add one to a playlist, it tells me it's going to make that playlist unavailable in the cloud.

I'm obviously authorized to play the music on this computer.

Could these be DRM protected and that's what's causing this? The "get info" screen doesn't show DRM status if that's the cause.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi Mrs Spooky,

Awesome user name! You may need to post a screen shot of what you're seeing so we can help figure it out ... but—

I don't have Apple Music but I subscribe to iTunes Match, and I've seen similar errors to the ones you describe. If this is any comfort, they almost always turn out to be transitory problems of some sort. To be specific, the warning about making a playlist unavailable is almost certainly something you can just click through and ignore — a scary icon will appear next to the playlist and then shortly vanish, as soon as the new music is processed and the system is happy again.

As to the main problem — "Item not added to iCloud Music Library because an error occurred" — I deal with these in two ways:

  • First, I select all the tracks involved, then control-click (2-finger tap, right click) and select "Add to iCloud Music Library" from the pop-up menu. This seems to simply cause iTunes to try again, and it works about 97% of the time.
  • For the other 3%, I drag the songs out of iTunes, into a temporary folder on the desktop. Then I delete them from the library. Then I import them again (by dragging the temp folder into the iTunes window and dropping it there).

Hope this is helpful. If not, post a screenshot. Cheers--
